State of the Arts: The Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel

For the third year in a row I will be working with artists, gallery directors, curators and collectors from around the country at this Portland art fair. Below is a look at what to expect this weekend when you attend.

The photos shown here are some of my
favorite shots from the past three years.

Opening Gala on Friday night is always a great opportunity to beat the weekend crowds and snatch up the most exciting new works for your own. A little later in the evening the artist party is the best time to meet the artists and gallery directors in a more social atmosphere.

INSIDER TIP:
If you are an artist, art dealer, gallery owner, collector
or simply art enthusiast the panel discussions and
key note speakers are not to be missed.

A peak inside the hotel rooms where each room has been transformed into a showcase for outstanding galleries from Portland to New York.

Friday night is absolutely the best time to come in and get the first pick of your favorite pieces before they sell. Saturday is a great day for local artists to come in and soak up the inspiration that comes from being surrounded by so much creative output. This is also the best day to bring friends who have never attended before. Sunday is the final day to acquire your artwork as well as take one last walk through to see anything you missed earlier.

Lifestyle Portraiture: Pediatricians

I've long been a fan of the pediatrician. It seems so many of them are such kind and gentle people who have a knack for showing the depth of their care in even the small interactions of life.

I had the pleasure of documenting these particular pediatricians on a recent September day while the weather was warm and perfect for portraiture. We had a beautiful cloud cover that stayed in place all day until just before sunset after we had wrapped up. Perfect timing! We had captured everyone in the diffused light of the cloudy day and enjoyed a gorgeous sunset before heading our separate ways.

A completely spontaneous photo shoot in collaboration with Brad Adkins. I brought my camera along to photograph what I thought might be another walk in the park. Instead he asked me to collaborate in a photoshoot with him. I wasn't anticipating a portraiture session, and didn't have along my usual tools for that kind of shoot - but I said yes in the spirit of artistic creation and community. Very different from my usual portrait sessions! He acted as director coaching the person in front of the camera. We chose a blank background together and I went into auto mode and there was no need for additional positioning or further beautification. While people usually hire me for the talent of portraying them in the most genuine and complimentary image - this shoot was all about capturing something non spectacular and very very simplified.

TBA:06 Ten Tiny Dances

9129serenadavidsonblogPICATENTINY

This is the third time I've had the pleasure to see Ten Tiny Dances. Each time I've been delighted and surprised. I've recommended it to anyone who was wondering what to check out during TBA this year and I'll continue to recommend it to anyone wherever they may perform. It's the kind of entertaining performance that pushes boundaries and gets you excited to create something wonderful and new in any art form.

TBA:06 Brad Adkins

I caught up with Brad Adkins and his entourage at Jamison Square Park. They crossed the park and sat at a bench all crowded in together. If I understood correctly they were all trying to achieve the same view of the park. I couldn't hear everything Brad was saying, but they all started recreating noises that were related to what they were looking at across the square. Not completely sure what they were trying to achieve or what else this excursion might bring them to I simply snapped a handful of photos before I had to head out to my previous engagement. I plan on catching up with Brad over the weekend to experience his art myself.

When I left this is how they looked. Perhaps Scott Smith, Mark Russell, Brad Adkins, or Kristan Kennedy will run into me and I'll have a chance to ask what it is they were doing and how they liked it.

Marc Acito reading the TBA guide description of the laptop project while we all try to figure out what we are inside of. Is the wallpaper the art? The Painting? The Space?

serenadavidson PICA TBA THE WORKS Laptop_6481
Evidently the space we are in is called THE UNIT and is the same mobile space I saw at last years Affair @ The Jupiter serving very ugly ice cream cones. According to the TBA:06 guide it is slated to facilitate a new roaming art project involving two German artists. The book says they will start in Portland and go around Oregon using THE UNIT "as a base for staging live performance and sculptural social interactions".

serenadavidson PICA TBA THE WORKS laptop_6487
Discussing "What is 'micro-nostalgia' anyway?"

When I first dragged Marc Acito and Floyd Sklaver over to get some photos of people in the art space we were a little confused. The piece seemed too oblique perhaps. But, then there we were stepping into a small confined space with four strangers and discussing micro-nostalgia.

During the experience I did come to appreciate the project. I've been to TBA Central where the stationary display of Laptop is decorating the large wall as you enter the Weiden and Kennedy building. I never stopped to discuss it with anyone and I barely interacted with the other people in the space. THE UNIT has a great architectural advantage - it's so small you pretty much have to acknowledge the other people in it. Very conveniently you are inside of a roving conversation piece. Naturally the interaction of strangers inside becomes a dialogue trying to answer the question "So, what is this?" THE UNIT had provided us with a space and pre-set topic for a spontaneous mini-salon in a space small enough to almost force the conversation.

Thanks Katherine Bovee and Philippe Blanc!

P.S. Hey Marc - remember that time your dad was visiting and we all talked about micro-nostalgia in THE UNIT?

A beautiful work that stayed with me. Got me thinking and opened me up in that way that great performances can at their best. Reawakening me to the long view of life in a way that brings me more into the present. What can I say? I liked it.

To me it said: "Loss and pain interupt our plans and our joys. Playmates and dear friends can bring our deepest pains. In the end - perhaps just to get through it all - forget about societies expectations and ridicule. Live life while you have it and do what feels right for you."

I photographed the computer screen to show Edie showing me the drawing she created of me. We had a surreal moment together just then. She told me how she was still feeling that awkward feeling of camera shyness even through the computer. I told her I felt the same sort of awkward feeling when I was attempting to draw her. Drawing is not something I consider myself good at. She said she really liked my drawing of her and i was just glad it came out looking like a drawing of someone.

serena davidson PICA TBA 2006Photo Edie Tsong 3782

She faxed me the drawing she did of me and I pinned it to the wall near the workstation along with my drawing of her.

This experience reminded me of the time I was on Capitol Hill in Seattle sitting in a massage chair at an oxygen bar with purple air tubes up my nose in the walkway of a mall. I enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone - despite the feeling that you might be sitting there in public looking really strange and oddly exposed.

Hot Rocks on a Platter...

Thursday, September 21st from 6-9 pm
The Tasting Room: 1924 Post
Alley, Seattle, WA
www.winesofwashington.com

I am so thrilled to introduce to you a young, spirited
& very talented artist by the name of Scarlet Chamberlin.

"I fell in love with rocks," Scarlet says simply, when asked how she found her way into the jewelry business. As a child, she and her brother took a great interest in learning how to identify semiprecious stones. At thirteen, she began experimenting with making jewelry out of the stones she loved, and a fledgling career was ignited.

With the encouragement of her
parents, self-taught Scarlet sold her jewelry to local boutiques in Portland. Throughout her teens she mostly made pieces for herself, family, and friends. After college, she returned to attend massage school, and focused her creative energy into that practice for the next three years.

It was while working a
s a doula (birth attendant) that her passion for jewelry was reborn. It was then that she fully realized how meaningful jewelry could be, and how much story was imbued into each original design. Ever since, she has created pieces that are connected to special occasions in people's lives
Scarlet's pieces are gaining a celebrated status. She recently went to NYC to participate in fashion week, not to mention her pieces have been worn to the Grammy's and by A-list celebrities.

There is no cost to attend just an rsvp as space is limited. A portion of all proceeds that night will benefit FareStart.

Call 206-770-9463 to reserve your spot or email us (jen@winesofwashington.com) with your name, phone number & number of guests.
